Volleyball Shoes

Understanding the importance of Volleyball Shoes is a great step towards becoming a top volleyball player. There are a very limited pieces of equipment that a professional volleyball player needs to wear, meaning that the ones that are in use become very important. To start off with, Volleyball players will wear a standard uniform (usually a shirt and shorts) and then they wear knee pads, ankle braces, sweat bands and of course Volleyball Shoes. The uniform is fairly standard across most sports, so it’s basically the knee pads, ankle braces and the Volleyball Shoes that play any real importance.

Knee pads are designed to protect the knee when a player has to dive on the floor. Often a player cannot get to the ball fast enough, before it gets to the ground. As a result, they will dive and put a hand out flat on the ground (known as a pancake). If they are good at it then the ball will bounce off their hand instead of the floor, and the point can continue to be played. Of course, diving is also done to pass the ball up if you need to move forward and down at the same time. Your knees are generally the first thing to touch the floor, which is why you wear pads. On a timber floor getting burned from diving is a real issue, and it happens regularly without the right protective equipment.

An ankle brace is quite simple. Because your Volleyball Shoes are designed to be low cut, they don’t offer a lot of support to the ankle if you move sideways. To counter this, most professionals will wear Ankle Supports, which go on before you put the shoes on, but after you put socks on. These limit the ability of an ankle to move sideways, which will most often stop (or minimize the damage) an ankle roll. This is one of the most common injuries when playing Volleyball!

The next item is the most important piece of equipment that you can have when playing Volleyball. Volleyball Shoes determine how fast you move, how fast you stop, how supported your ankles and feet are and a major contribution to the way that you jump. Ultimately the difference in Volleyball Shoes can play a huge variation in the quality of volleyball that you play. Of course, if you have only just started the sport then going out and buying the best quality volleyball shoes on the market is not necessary, but once you start playing state level and above if you can comfortably afford the shoes it’s a good idea. I am a big fan of Asics Volleyball Shoes though!

I played with Basketball shoes for a long time, but these are considerably heavier, not as grippy and they don’t tend to support your feet as well. Volleyball Shoes have some very specific traits about them, which make them so good for the sport. To start off with, they are designed with a toe that points upwards. This encourages the player to stand on the front of their feet, which is the position where you can move the fastest from. Having the ability to move quickly in Volleyball is most often the difference between winning a game and not winning it!

One of the most important things about Volleyball Shoes is that they are designed with a soft, gel like sole. This moulds well to the timber floor, giving you the best grip that you can have on such a surface. The negative of this though is that they wear very quickly on other surfaces that are rough. For example, if you use them to walk around on concrete, bricks or tarmac you can expect to wear them out very quickly.

Volleyball Shoes are designed to be very light weight too, to ensure that they limit your jumping ability as least as possible. They are also designed to provide a lot of support to your feet. When you have some of the professionals jumping up over a meter from the floor, it’s highly important that they land comfortably, or the bones and muscles in your legs and feet would become damaged very quickly.

There are a number of different brand Volleyball Shoes, but the two most dominant brands include Mizuno Volleyball Shoes and Asics Volleyball Shoes. By looking at the shoes that the Olympic players wear, you will soon determine what shoes are the best. Of course, finding something that is comfortable to wear, that looks good and that works well is the most important thing on your agenda when shopping for Volleyball Shoes. Be sure that you match your skill level with the money that you spend too! If you have only just started, look for Cheap Volleyball Shoes.
